Located in Bismarck, ND the State Historical Society has a wealth of resources available for students to learn about the history of North Dakota, its people and culture.

Programs are available for Wednesday sessions from 10:00–11:00 a.m. Central time.

The Capitol of North Dakota is Bismarck

  • Students will walk through the history of the city of Bismarck from its beginnings as a stop on the building of the North Pacific railroad through the building of the two capitols. The politics of how Bismarck came to be the capitol and more, what ND's first time capsule contained and so much more!

Native American Dwellings

  • Students will learn about the oldest house in North Dakota, approximately 2,000 years old.

Fur Trade

  • Fur trade focuses on the time period of 1750–1860 when European fur trappers and traders came into North Dakota.

Learning US History Inside and Out

  • Students will revisit ND history learned in grade 4 starting from one state's structure and explain the settlement of the United States. For example, why people came to ND reflects much of why people came to the US.

Early People in North Dakota

  • Students will explore the four hands-on stations in pre-tribal history of the indigenous people in the area now know as North Dakota. Stations explore hunting, eating and living conditions of people about 12,000 years ago in ND with an additional station on use of clays in making pottery.

Homesteading in North Dakota

  • North Dakota was homesteaded in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Using our galleries and photos we will learn about the life of the settlers coming into North Dakota to claim farmland or settle in the towns. What was life like for kids during that time?

Inventions, Innovations & Adaptations

  • Students will have an opportunity to see the main gallery at the State Historical Society in showcasing the progression of inventions throughout history, how those inventions are adapted over time and also the innovations that come about because of demand.
