Dreamweaver

  1. After you have opened Dreamweaver, you need to create a new site. On the right side of your screen, there should be a window with two tabs: Site and Assets. Make sure Site tab is chosen and under that tab you should see four menu choices: File, Edit, View and Site. Click on the down arrow right of the word Site. You will see a number of choices. Highlight and click on the first one - New Site.
  2. The next window is the Site Definition window. This is where you decide what you want the local name/folder of your website to be called. Make sure the Basic tab at the top is chosen. Type in the name you want then click Next.
  3. Next window asks Do you want to work with a server technology such as ColdFusion, ASP., choose No, I do not want to use a server technology. Then click Next.
  4. The next window wants to know where you want to keep the local folder containing all your web pages. It is highly recommended you pick the top choice, Edit local copies on my machine, then upload to server when ready. Below that the question is asked, Where on your computer do you want to store your files? The icon to the right of the fill-in box lets you browse to the location you want. Again this is where you will keep all your web pages (locally) for your website. The content of this folder becomes a mirror image of the website stored on the server. Click Next when finished.
  5. The next window is where you tell Dreamweaver where to make the connection to the web server and find the /htdocs directory in your webspace:
    • How do you connect to your remote server? click on the drop down arrow to the right and pick FTP.
    • What is the hostname of FTP address of your Web server? type in your domain name that was emailed to you. Example www.test.k12.nd.us or www2.edutech.nodak.edu. BE SURE to use the one that was emailed to you.
    • What folder on the server do you want to store your files in? Type /htdocs in that box.
    • What is your FTP login type in your login.
    • What is your FTP Password. Type in your password. The Save button is automatically checked. It is recommended leaving it checked.
    • Click the Test Connection button to see if it worked. If it worked, you will see a window stating Macromedia Dreamweaver MX connected to your Web server successfully - click OK.
    • Click Next to continue
  6. The next window asks, Do you want to enable checking in and checking out files, to ensure that you and your co-workers cannot edit the same file at the same time? You are most likely the only one editing the website, so chose No, do not enable check in and check out. Click Next.
  7. The next window is to verify if the information you have typed is correct. If it correct, click Done. If it is not correct, use the Back button to make appropriate changes.
