Configuring an existing account to use SSL
- From the Outlook Express menu, click Tools > Accounts.
- Click the Mail tab. Highlight your SENDIT e-mail account and click Properties.
- Click on the Servers tab. At the bottom of this window is a section labeled Outgoing Mail Server. Click the box to the left of My server requires authentication and click Settings.
- In the Outgoing Mail Server window make sure the radio button for Use same settings as my incoming mail server is checked. Click OK.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- In the Server Port Numbers section, check the boxes for both Outgoing mail and Incoming mail that says This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Make sure the Outgoing mail port number is 587 and the Incoming mail port number is 993.
- Click Apply and then OK.
- Click on Close.
- Note: If you are unable to send mail, change Outgoing port from 587 to 25.
Setting up a new account
- From the Outlook Express menu, click Tools -> Accounts.
- Click the Mail tab. On the right side, click Add -> Mail.
- In the Display name field, enter your name and click Next.
- In the E-mail address field, enter in your complete e-mail address (e.g., john.doe@sendit.nodak.edu) in the E-mail address field and click Next.
- Select IMAP from the drop down list in the E-mail Server Names window and enter the following information in the appropriate area:
- Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: imap.sendit.nodak.edu
- Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: smtp.sendit.nodak.edu
- Click Next.
- In the Internet Mail Logon window fill in the Account name field with your login name (e.g., john.doe). You may also choose to enter your password. If you wish, you can have Outlook Express remember your password by checking the Remember password box. Click Next and then click Finish.
- You should now be back at the Internet Accounts window. Make sure the account you just created is highlighted and then click Properties.
- Click on the Servers tab, at the bottom of this window is a section labeled Outgoing Mail Server. Click the box to the left of My server requires authentication and click Settings.
- In the Outgoing Mail Server window make sure the radio button for Use same settings as my incoming mail server is checked. Click OK.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- In the Server Port Numbers section, check the boxes for both Outgoing mail and Incoming mail that says This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Make sure the Outgoing mail port number is 587 and the Incoming mail port number is 993.
- Click the tab labeled IMAP.
- In the Special Folders section, uncheck the box for Store special folders on IMAP server.
- Click OK and Close.
- When prompted with Would you like to download folders… click Yes.
- If you are prompted to enter your password, do so and then click OK.
- A Show/Hide IMAP Folders window will appear, click OK.
