Configuring Outlook

Configuring an existing account to use SSL in Outlook 2002 (XP) and 2003

  1. From the Outlook menu, click Tools > E-mail Accounts…
  2. Under E-mail, select the radio button next to View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.
  3. Highlight your SENDIT e-mail account and click Change…
  4. Click the More Settings… button.
  5. In the Outgoing Server tab, make sure the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked. Make sure the radio button Use same settings as my incoming mail server is also checked.
  6. Click on Advanced tab.
  7. In the Incoming server (IMAP) area, check the box This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). If the server port number is not 993, insert 993.
  8. In the Outgoing server (SMTP) area, check the box This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). If the server port number is not 587, insert 587.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click Next and Finish.
  • Note: If you are unable to send mail, change Outgoing port from 587 to 25.

Setting up a new account in Outlook 2002 (XP) and 2003

  1. From the Outlook menu, click Tools > E-mail Accounts…
  2. In the E-mail section, select the radio button for Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
  3. Select the radio button for IMAP and click Next.
  4. In the User Information section, enter your name and full SENDIT e-mail address (e.g., john.doe@sendit.nodak.edu).
  5. In the Logon Information section, enter your user name (e.g., john.doe). You may also choose to complete the Password field. If you wish, you can have Outlook remember your password by checking the Remember password box.
  6. Enter the following information in the Server Information area:
    • Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.sendit.nodak.edu
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.sendit.nodak.edu
  7. Click the More Settings… button.
  8. In the Outgoing Server tab, check on the box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Make sure the radio button Use same settings as my incoming mail server is also checked.
  9. Click the Advanced tab.
  10. In the Incoming server (IMAP) area, check the box This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). If the server port number is not 993, insert 993.
  11. In the Outgoing server (SMTP) area, check the box This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL). If the server port number is not 587, insert 587.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Click Next.
  14. Click Finish.

Setting up a new account in Outlook 2007

  1. From the Outlook menu, select Tools > Account Settings.
  2. In the E-mail section, click New…
  3. In the Choose E-mail Service section, make sure Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or HTTP radio button is selected and click Next.
  4. In the Auto Account Setup screen, enter your name, full e-mail address (e.g., john.doe@sendit.nodak.edu), password and re-type the password and then click Next.
  5. The next screen is a Congratulations/Configuring screen. Click Finish.
  6. That will take you back to the Account Settings screen, click Close.
  • Note: If you have problems sending with Outlook 2007, go back to your account settings and click on the More Settings button, in the lower right, then click on the Advanced tab and make sure the outgoing e-mail settings for encrypted connection is set to TLS and not SSL. This applies only for the outgoing server and only for Outlook 2007.
