Configuring Apple Mail
Configuring an existing account to use SSL
- With Mail open, select Preferences… from the Mail menu.
- In the preferences window that appears, select Accounts from the toolbar at the top.
- Select your SENDIT e-mail account from the list in the left hand column.
- In the Account Information tab, click the Server Settings… button. In the sheet that appears, enter the following:
- Change the Server port to 587
- Check the box next to Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
- Change the Authentication drop down list to Password
- Enter your SENDIT user name and password in the appropriate fields
- Click OK
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Check the box next to Use SSL and ensure that the Port changes to 993.
- Close the preferences window. Click Save if prompted to save your changes.
Setting up a new account
If you’re using Mail for the very first time, follow the instructions below regarding the Setup Assistant. Otherwise, perform these initial steps:
- With Mail open, select Preferences… from the Mail menu.
- In the preferences window that appears, select Accounts from the toolbar at the top.
- At the bottom of the Accounts window, click the plus sign (+).
- The Setup Assistant appears. Continue with the directions below.
When launching Mail for the first time, the Setup Assistant will appear. Enter the following information:
- In the General Information section:
- Account Type: Select IMAP
- Account Description: Enter a descriptive name (e.g., SENDIT e-mail)
- Full Name: Enter your full name as you want others to see it (e.g., John Doe)
- Email Address: Enter your complete SENDIT e-mail address. (e.g., john.doe@sendit.nodak.edu)
- Click Continue
- In the Incoming Mail Server section:
- Incoming Mail Server: imap.sendit.nodak.edu
- User Name: Your SENDIT username (e.g., john.doe)
- Password: Your SENDIT e-mail password
- Click Continue
- In the Outgoing Mail Server section:
- Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.sendit.nodak.edu
- Check the box next to Use Authentication
- Enter your SENDIT user name and password in the appropriate fields
- Click Continue
- At the Account Summary section, click Continue, then Done.
- Back in the Account Information tab, click the Server Settings… button.
- Change the Server port to 587.
- Click OK.
- Select the Mailbox Behaviors tab.
- Uncheck the boxes for Store draft messages on the server, Store sent messages on the server, and Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox.
- Close the preferences window. Click Save if prompted to save your changes.
