Configuring Apple Mail

Configuring an existing account to use SSL

  1. With Mail open, select Preferences… from the Mail menu.
  2. In the preferences window that appears, select Accounts from the toolbar at the top.
  3. Select your SENDIT e-mail account from the list in the left hand column.
  4. In the Account Information tab, click the Server Settings… button. In the sheet that appears, enter the following:
    • Change the Server port to 587
    • Check the box next to Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    • Change the Authentication drop down list to Password
    • Enter your SENDIT user name and password in the appropriate fields
    • Click OK
  5. Select the Advanced tab.
  6. Check the box next to Use SSL and ensure that the Port changes to 993.
  7. Close the preferences window. Click Save if prompted to save your changes.

Setting up a new account

If you’re using Mail for the very first time, follow the instructions below regarding the Setup Assistant. Otherwise, perform these initial steps:

  1. With Mail open, select Preferences… from the Mail menu.
  2. In the preferences window that appears, select Accounts from the toolbar at the top.
  3. At the bottom of the Accounts window, click the plus sign (+).
  4. The Setup Assistant appears. Continue with the directions below.

When launching Mail for the first time, the Setup Assistant will appear. Enter the following information:

  1. In the General Information section:
    • Account Type: Select IMAP
    • Account Description: Enter a descriptive name (e.g., SENDIT e-mail)
    • Full Name: Enter your full name as you want others to see it (e.g., John Doe)
    • Email Address: Enter your complete SENDIT e-mail address. (e.g., john.doe@sendit.nodak.edu)
    • Click Continue
  2. In the Incoming Mail Server section:
    • Incoming Mail Server: imap.sendit.nodak.edu
    • User Name: Your SENDIT username (e.g., john.doe)
    • Password: Your SENDIT e-mail password
    • Click Continue
  3. In the Outgoing Mail Server section:
    • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.sendit.nodak.edu
    • Check the box next to Use Authentication
    • Enter your SENDIT user name and password in the appropriate fields
    • Click Continue
  4. At the Account Summary section, click Continue, then Done.
  5. Back in the Account Information tab, click the Server Settings… button.
  6. Change the Server port to 587.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Select the Mailbox Behaviors tab.
  9. Uncheck the boxes for Store draft messages on the server, Store sent messages on the server, and Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox.
  10. Close the preferences window. Click Save if prompted to save your changes.
