Sylink Update

In the last week, EduTech experienced a disruption to our Symantec service which caused us to lose communication with the Symantec EndPoint Protection clients. Because we do not have administrative access to machines in your schools, we must ask you to update a file on these machines before communication with our server can be restored.

You may update the file through disk imaging or deployment services, if your district uses those types of tools. If you normally have to visit every machine to install software, this will be no different.

EduTech deeply apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is the only way to ensure your workstations are updating virus definitions and security settings properly.

There are 3 different ways to restore communications with EduTech's Symantec Endpoint Protection Management Server, keep in mind you'll have to have administrative privileges to perform these processes. In the testing we have done, Option #1 below has taken care of the majority of the workstations, with a small number needing to perform Option #2.

Files Required for the Update

Option #1 (Easiest, fixes majority of communication problems)

  1. Download both Sylink.xml and SylinkDrop.exe and Save them to your desktop.
  2. After downloading them, locate the SylinkDrop.exe program and double-click on it to run it.
  3. Browse to your desktop (where you downloaded it) and select Sylink.xml.
  4. Run the update.
  5. If after a couple of minutes the Symantec Endpoint Protection shield in your computers notification area (lower right corner of the desktop) doesn't get a green dot, right mouse click the shield and click Update Policy.
  6. If you get an error running the Sylink Drop program, click on Start > Run and enter "smc -start" (no quotes). If the shield does not turn green within a few moments, right-click on it and select Update Policy. If this still fails to produce a green dot on the shield, please perform Option #2, starting with Step 2.

Option #2 (Manually performs the procedure automated in Option #1)

  1. Download Sylink.xml and Save it to your desktop.
  2. Click on Start > Run and type "smc -stop" (no quotes)
  3. Copy the Sylink.xml to the Symantec Endpoint Protection folder in the program files directory. The path can vary depending on many variables. It can be c:\program files\symantec\symantec endpoint protection OR c:\program files\symantec\symantec client security OR c:\program files\symantec.
  4. When copying it, you should be prompted whether to replace the current file. If you are prompted, you have the correct path or you can do a search on your machine to find that path.
  5. After copying Sylink.xml and replacing the existing one, click on Start > Run and type "smc -start". The dot on the shield should turn green. If not you may need to right mouse click the shield and click Update Policy.
  6. In the rare case that this does not restore communications, you will need to reinstall the SEP client.

Option #3 (Reinstall SEP client)

  1. If neither Option #1 or Option #2 are able to restore communications, the client will need to be reinstalled.
  2. Please follow the instructions in the SEP Installation Guide.
  3. If after reinstall a green dot fails to appear, perform Option #2.
