I attended the TIE Conference in Rapid City, South Dakota. One session I attended was entitled Web 2.0 Technologies-Blogs and Wikis. The presenters were Julie Mathiesen and Lennie Symes. They gave us hands on experiences with wikis and blogs. They also emphasized many reasons for encouraging teachers and students to blog and use wikis. The reasons they gave were creating communities, self expression, authentic experiences, improving literacy, and engaging students.
Mr. Sheehy was a guest speaker who uses blogs and wikis with students. He had a lot of great ideas of how to use wikis to motivate students by helping them realize they have a worldwide audience. Click the following links to access the workshop materials.
John Gieser and I also presented Podcasting and K-12 Education to about 100 people. We showed them how to search for podcasts and an overview of making a podcast.
Will Richardson was the keynote speaker. He spoke about how educators are blocking student learning because we block certain sites. He talked about trying to teach students life lessons and how to use these sites responsibly and manage them instead of unsuccessfully trying to keep them from them.
During this class students learn how to create non-linear presentations. Whichever presentation software one uses, the order of information dissemination is decided by choices the user makes.
