Six North Dakota High School Science Classrooms Participate in Interactive Live Knee Surgery April 9th, 2008
On Wednesday, April 9, [insert teacher’s name, science teacher and students from school here] was one of six North Dakota classrooms to participate in a live interactive total knee replacement surgery by videoconference with Ohio Surgical Suite at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus. This event was coordinated by EduTech and COSI Science Center of Columbus, Ohio.
Surgical Suite is a multi-point program that connects up to 5 or 6 schools at one time, including an audience at COSI for groups and individuals. Students from each video location across North Dakota had an opportunity to watch and ask questions of the surgeon and medical personnel during the surgery using a round robin, facilitated format.
Prior to the surgery each teacher received a kit of materials to conduct pre- and post-visit activities, along with booklets for the students to use during the program.
Participating North Dakota Schools included Beulah, Bottineau, Elgin, Glenburn, Jamestown and Tioga High Schools. Schools were selected on a first come, first serve basis. Other out of state participants included Shadyside High School in Ohio, Kempner High School and MacArthur High School in Texas and Picture Butte High School in Alberta, Canada.
Conference technical services and facilitation of the live total knee surgery in North Dakota was provided through the collaborative efforts of the Information Technology Department (ITD) and EduTech Education Technology Services.
