Lewis & Clark Summer Institute for Educators

The North Dakota Lewis & Clark Resource Coalition invites you to join us at the…

Lewis & Clark Summer Institute for Educators - August 16-17, 2006 at the Fort Berthold Community College in New Town, ND

This year’s Institute will be held concurrently with the National Signature Event “Home of Sakakawea” planned in New Town, North Dakota - the historical homelands of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nations. Participating K-12 educators will have the opportunity to join in the event’s Education Symposium.

To mark the 200th anniversary of the Corps of Discovery’s joyful return to the Knife River Villages, the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation invite America to gather with the tribes who observed or encountered the Lewis and Clark Expedition in an event offering Native American perspectives. This signature event will contrast the hopes and dreams of President Thomas Jefferson with those of tribal leaders who met Lewis and Clark.

It will also focus on the contributions of Sakakawea, the only woman who was part of the expedition. Her extraordinary story will be presented from the oral histories of all the tribes who knew her and taught her. This Native American event will offer an Indian arts market and trade show, men’s traditional dance tournament, cultural demonstrations and re-enactments, and tours of Indian Country.

Institute agenda includes the following sessions and guest presenters:

    Wednesday, August 16th
  • Clay Jenkinson
  • The Arrow Throwing Game, Jim Baker and Jeff Baker
  • Mandan Stories and Language, Edwin Bensen
  • Hidatsa and Mandan Stories and Language, Louella Young Bear
  • Sanish Stories and Language, Martha Baker
  • Traditions of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Lyle Gwyn
  • Native American Illustrations, Michael Haynes
  • Native American Traditional Evening Meal
  • Eagle Feather Dancers
    Thursday, August 17th
  • The Tent of Many Voices
  • Museum visits
  • Buffalo Feed

Participant fees are $100 and include all activities and meals for the two day conference.

Participants will be eligible for one continuing education credit through Minot State University. Matriculation fee is $60 due at the end of the Institute.

A block of rooms has been reserved for participants at the Roosevelt Motel in Watford City, ND (701.842.3686). Ask for a room reserved for the “L&C Teacher Institute.” Participants must call the motel and reserve their rooms by August 1. The motel will release remaining rooms after that date. A single night’s lodging is $39.90 double occupancy plus tax.

A primary goal of the North Dakota Lewis & Clark Resource Coalition is to provide professional development opportunities that enable educators to expand their content knowledge and provide resources for curriculum planning and development. The North Dakota Lewis & Clark Resource Coalition is a group of partners committed to bringing the history and valuable learning of the Lewis & Clark Expedition to the K-12 classroom.
